Microschools in Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek and across the Valley

A model with Mesa roots

Prenda, one of the best-known microschool networks in the country, started in Mesa. Founder Kelly Smith, a Mesa father, built small groups of five to ten students working with a learning guide, and he now describes Prenda as a microschool network based in Mesa that families can attend using their ESA. By 2024 Prenda supported more than 80 home-based schools around greater Phoenix and ran a microschool inside Eisenhower Elementary in Mesa Public Schools.

What else is out there

The Valley's microschool scene is broad. Acton Academy has campuses in Paradise Valley and Queen Creek. Primer runs a teacher-led K-8 school in Scottsdale. KaiPod Learning has run storefront centers of up to 24 learners. Coverage of the local scene has also named Science Prep Academy, ReThink Microschools in Mesa for neurodivergent students in grades 6-12, and faith-based home programs. RISE Phoenix Microschool is a partner of the Greater Arizona STO. Many programs are small and change quickly, so visit before you commit.

Why the far East Valley and Pinal are fertile ground

ESA growth has been fastest in Queen Creek, San Tan Valley and the city of Maricopa, where population has outrun new school buildings. A microschool needs a room, a guide and a handful of families, which makes it the quickest option to appear in a new subdivision. Statewide, nearly 40 percent of ESA spending in one recent quarter went to homeschool products and services rather than tuition, a sign of how many families are building their own mix.

How the ESA pays a microschool

Ask whether the program is set up in ClassWallet and how it invoices: as a qualified school, a tutoring or teaching service, or an online program. Tuition, tutoring and curriculum are all allowed uses, but the invoice must be detailed, and receipts from payment apps alone are not accepted. Price ranges vary widely; KaiPod reported $5,000 to $10,000 depending on use, which is within the $7,105–$10,540 range for grades 1-12.

What to ask a microschool

Who leads the room day to day and what are their qualifications? Does the program fingerprint staff who have unsupervised contact with children, which matters for paying tuition from the ESA? What curriculum does it use, and what reports will you get? How many days a week, and what happens if the program closes mid-year? A good microschool will answer all of these in writing.

Private schools in Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek and Pinal County (74)

* Enrollment reported to the NCES Private School Survey (2023-24 or 2021-22). "STO lists" counts the School Tuition Organizations whose published school list included the school (Oct 2026). Arizona has no state list of ESA schools; ask each school whether it accepts ESA payments through ClassWallet.
